Cryogenic liquid trough for X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence scattering

Résumé

The photograph depicts a cryogenic chamber containing a circular trough with 140mm diameter and 4mm depth for a liquid. This chamber has been designed to hold a liquid (here: glycerol) with a large surface suitable to accommodate a long X-ray beam footprint typical of grazing-incidence X-ray scattering experiments. The accessible temperature range is from 170 K to 340 K and the temperature stability better than 0.02K. The setup is double-walled with a thermally insulating vacuum between the inner and outer chamber. The cooling is achieved by evaporating liquid nitrogen in a heat exchanger underneath the inner chamber, and the heating via an electrical resistor on the heat exchanger. The photograph depicts this cryogenic chamber (center) being mounted on the sample stage of the ID10A beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. The X-ray beam impinges from the right at a grazing incidence angle of 0.075 degrees relative to the horizontal sample surface through a 12 micrometer pinhole (not directly visible), providing a coherent beam, and through a guard slit. The detector flight tube visible on the left side of the image is attached to the vacuum of the outer chamber via a bellow connector. The foam insulator tubes connected to the chamber at the bottom contain the nitrogen inlet and outlet tubes. The cables on the top lid of the chamber provide the power supply of the heater and readout of the temperature and pressure sensors inside the chamber.
