Tlemcen and the Two Great Merinid Sieges (698–737/1299–1337)
Tlemcen et les deux grands sièges mérinides (698‑737/1299‑1337)
Résumé
Coveted by both the Merinids of Fez and the Hafsids of Tunis, the city of Tlemcen, capital
of the Zianid dynasty, was besieged many times. Two of these sieges, launched by the Merinids
of Fez, stand out in particular because of their scale and duration. These campaigns marked the history of Tlemcen from 1299–1306 (the first major siege) and 1335–1337 (the second). The texts provide some information about the daily life of the population of Tlemcen while under siege. A reading of the chronicles that report these sieges is proposed in order to highlight the depictions of siege warfare by the medieval authors who wrote about Tlemcen and the
Zianid dynasty.
