Introduction à Archéologie de la Caraïbe et Convention du Patrimoine Mondial

Résumé

From 20 to 23 September 2004, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre organized an International Seminar between the official representatives and experts of Caribbean archaeology for the Identification of Archaeological Sites of the Caribbean likely to be nominated for inscription on the World Heritage List, at Fort-de-France, in Martinique. This Seminar was a follow up to World Heritage Global Strategy activities of the Caribbean region since 1996 and to the ‘International Seminar on Archaeological Sites of the Caribbean’ organized at the Museo del Hombre Dominicano of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on 7 and 8 July 2003. The main objective of this international and intergovernmental meeting was to initiate an in-depth reflection on archaeological cultural heritage in the Caribbean and how to best represent this heritage in all its diversity on the World Heritage List. Reflection on the identification, protection, conservation and nomination of this type of very vulnerable cultural heritage in the Caribbean were also objectives of the meeting. This meeting provided the opportunity for archaeologists and governmental experts to communicate about their work and to propose recommendations regarding the archaeological sites likely to be considered for World Heritage candidature according to five major transversal themes: Rock art, Amerindian archaeological sites of the Caribbean, Contact Period, Cultural Landscapes, African heritage in the Caribbean. The seminar also provided guidelines for the orientation of activities of a transnational character in line with the World Heritage Convention, and highlighted the urgency for protection and conservation of archaeological heritage in the countries of the Caribbean. Finally, it emphasized the implications of enhancing archaeological areas, whilst respecting and strengthening Caribbean cultural identity. During the meeting, the ‘Martinique Declaration’ and a short and medium-term Action Plan were prepared. This international seminar was organized by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Regional Council of Martinique (Museum Services). For the organization of the meeting, cooperation was established between the Ministry of Culture of Spain, the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy. Technical support was also provided by CARIMOS (Organization of the Wider Caribbean on Monuments and Sites), ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) as well as IACA (International Association for Caribbean Archaeology).
