Nos corps sans tombeaux... La spectralisation des migrants au cinéma

Yann Calvet

Résumé

Over the past few years, documentaries and films dealing in the fantasy genre with the issue of migration have been appearing on theater screens, opening up depictions of reality onto the invisible and the ghostly, creating a discourse around the idea of absence. This spectralization of cinematic images has a history, first in Europe with the cultural productions that followed the two world wars of the 20th century and most importantly in the United States where a fascination for the return of specters and ghosts translates into a tendency to exhume in literature and cinema all of history’s dead. Using a few contemporary productions, Nathalie Loubeyre's documentary film La Mécanique des flux (2016), fictional films like Andrea Segre's L’Ordre des choses (2017) and Mati Diop's Atlantique (2019), we will question this new “poetics” of “haunting” in works dealing with contemporary migration crises.
