The alleged Moorish invasions into Hispania under Marcus Aurelius’ reign: an essay in synthesis
Les prétendues invasions maures en Hispanie sous le règne de Marc Aurèle : essai de synthèse
Résumé
In the 170’s A.D., Moorish troops from western North Africa repeatedly plundered the south of the Iberian peninsula. The latter events are known thanks to two passages in Historia Augusta and two inscriptions from Baetica; ancient historiography made them popular under the term of ≪Moorish invasions≫. The unfolding and chronology of those alleged invasions must however be revised in order to illuminate their interpretation: are we dealing with raids swiftly fought back by Roman might or attempts at occupation fostered by an unstable context in North Africa?
