Education under totalitarian regimes: The case of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria
L'éducation sous les régimes totalitaires : Le cas de l'État islamique en Irak et en Syrie

This article discusses the education system under the totalitarian regime of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) from 2014 to 2017. It describes and analyses the characteristics of the totalitarian education system, as conceived and implemented by the Salafist and jihadist group. The aim of this article to understand some of the totalitarian educational tools used by ISIS and to contribute to the understanding of education induced by totalitarian regimes, including its common features and implications. The analysis reveals fundamental characteristics: (a) the destruction of the existing education system in order to redefine its contours entirely, (b) an attempt to control educational content completely in order to apply a comprehensive doctrine, (c) the infusion of terror by means of extreme violence and fear throughout all educational components, and (d) the enforced loneliness of individuals in order to annihilate their creative potential. The challenge today is to prevent the “totalitarian temptation” by proposing educational approaches adapted to counteract these new jihadist attempts.
Cet article traite du système éducatif sous le régime totalitaire de l'État islamique en Irak et en Syrie (ISIS) de 2014 à 2017. Il décrit et analyse les caractéristiques du système éducatif totalitaire, tel que conçu et mis en œuvre par le groupe salafiste et djihadiste. Le but de cet article est de comprendre certains des outils éducatifs totalitaires utilisés par ISIS et de contribuer à la compréhension de l'éducation induite par les régimes totalitaires, y compris ses caractéristiques communes et ses implications. L'analyse révèle des caractéristiques fondamentales : (a) la destruction du système éducatif existant afin d'en redéfinir entièrement les contours, (b) une tentative de contrôle total du contenu éducatif afin d'appliquer une doctrine globale, (c) l'infusion de la terreur par le biais d'une violence et d'une peur extrêmes dans toutes les composantes éducatives, et (d) la solitude forcée des individus afin d'annihiler leur potentiel créatif. L'enjeu aujourd'hui est de prévenir la "tentation totalitaire" en proposant des approches éducatives adaptées pour contrer ces nouvelles tentatives djihadistes.
