We propose an analysis of Anatomy of a Moment by Javier Cercas, published in 2009 in Spain and devoted to the Transition and one of its most dramatic moments: the attempted coup of 23 February. The aim is to show that this book is above all a novel, not a history book, and that the archive plays a pivotal role in that it participates in a textual but also pictorial/scenographic device aimed at making the text tend towards a claimed factuality while being the object of various uses that contribute to keeping the text within the bounds of fiction.
