Between kings and dukes. The young Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon in the occupied States of Savoy (1536-1559)

Résumé

The young years of Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon were impacted by the conquest and occupation of the States of Savoy by the French Kingdom. From 1536 to 1559, most of the territories ruled by the Dukes of Savoy was reduced to the authority of the King of France. It is in this context that Pingon received an education, composed his first texts and took up his first offices. From 1550, he conducted embassies on behalf of the Duke of Savoy, then became a lawyer at the Parlement de Chambéry, established by François Ier, before joining the Conseil de Genevois of Jacques de Savoie-Nemours. By crossing Pingon's autobiography, Hic Vita Mea, and the various sources of the French occupation of Savoy, the aim of this paper is to take a particular interest in the poet’s early years and to question his trajectory as a young officer in a time-space marked by coexistence and competition of several powers. Following the trail of Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon in this period helps us to approach the situation of the Savoyard Nobles of the Robe during the occupation, split between loyalty to the Duke of Savoy and need to accept the new French power. Pingon acted with fluidity, moving between several authorities. However, this did not hinder him from sometimes taking a stand in defence of Savoyard specificities.
