Atlas of the Athenian Funerary Evidence (11th-7th c. B.C.) (https://fm01.db.huma-num.fr/fmi/webd/Atlas-Athens)

Résumé

The four-year project “Atlas of the funerary evidence of Athens (11th – 7th c. B.C.)” has the primary objective to provide an efficient and scientifically-oriented tool for the retrieval of information related to the burials and burial practices in the multi-stratified area around the Athenian Acropolis. The scope of the project is the five centuries beginning with the transition from the final Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age, including the Iron Age up to the beginning of the Archaic Age. The project is directed by Professor Anna Maria D´Onofrio of the Department of Asian, African and Mediterranean Studies at the University of Naples “L´Orientale”. The project started in May 2015 with the participation of Dr. Annarita Doronzio, principal investigator and research fellow, thanks to funding by the Ministry of Education, University and Research. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens, Ministry of Culture and Sports, directed by Dr. Eleni Banou, in line with an official agreement between the University “L’Orientale” and the Ephorate, kindly supplying bibliography and iconographical documentation in digital format. Doronzio has the responsibility for the scientific integrity of the database and for collecting the data. Thanks to an agreement between our University and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, it has been possible to create the database, using FileMaker Pro software, due to the work of Vincenzo Capozzoli and Alain Duplouy. The database has been implemented, on FileMaker Server 17 software, through a partnership of the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne with the French Research Infrastructure TGIR Huma-num. Following the completion of data entry, the database will be available online, and accessed using a FileMaker client on a desktop PC or laptop, or by using a simple web browser on any computer connected to the dedicated website. We are planning to reach a wide public, and are making the database accessible to everyone who is interested in it, following a user registration. The focus of our database is directed to providing the exact location of each grave, as well as the locations of the burial plots and burial grounds or extensive cemeteries. All existing records have been collected and are being processed to provide the main information: showing the exact points of discovery in the city plan. At the moment the database contains the records concerning 118 findspots and 650 graves, comprising all the graves found in the area of the historical city and in the ancient Agora. The data entry for the graves in the necropolis of the Kerameikos (c. 420 graves) is ongoing.
