A Crisis of Identity: Hollywood’s Shifting Political History, From the 1920s to Today.

Résumé

This paper investigates the political history of Hollywood, arguing that Hollywood has undergone various ‘identity crises’ over time. The history of Hollywood’s more conservative past is outlined, followed by an investigation into when, why and how the entertainment industry became more liberal leaning. Finally, this paper examines what these ‘identity crises’ have meant for the entertainment industry and the content it produces. Is there currently an ‘anti-conservative’ backlash occurring in Hollywood? More and more conservative figures are being ‘canceled’ for their views, which in turn is driving them to create more niche, conservative content. I argue that the entertainment industry itself has therefore become polarised; this can have a bleeding out effect on the viewer, which in turn can exacerbate polarisation. In effect, Hollywood can be seen as a microcosm of US political life, i.e., the tensions within Hollywood are the same as those at the heart of American politics right now.
