Geographical approach to interactions between LGBT+ residents and LGBT+ tourists in Barcelona (Spain). A local perspective

Résumé

Tourism is often quoted as an element of mutual enrichment between visitors and local population. Therefore, interactions between residents and tourists are a key element in understanding residents’ attitude towards tourism and in evaluating the tourism experience. In order to make a contribution to the debate around the social sustainability of tourism, this study presents the results of a field research with LGBT residents of Barcelona to analyze their spatial dynamics in relation to the presence of LGBT tourists. If there are interactions or not, why, what kind of interactions and where they take place. This vision from local side is crucial to apprehend the tourist destination, a space of hybridization between the everyday dynamics of the local population and the temporary dynamics of visitors. This work combines semi-directed interviews with LGBT residents of Barcelona and participatory observations. The results give a rich and nuanced view of the city's LGBT sites beyond the Gaixample, the area with the highest concentration of gay leisure. In this context, the search for less touristy spaces and even the creation of alternative spaces for socialising and leisure emerges. They also account for the differences and nuances according to each community; the ignorance of the tourist fact; the gap between expectations and reality; and the growing importance of previous contacts using dating apps.
