Wind Speed as a Dominant Source of Periodicities in Reported Emission Rates of Volcanic SO 2

Abstract

• Majority of periodicities identified in the emission rate of SO 2 are related global trade winds and not volcanic in origin • We identified periodicities between 30 and 70 days that are associated to the Madden-Julian Oscillation • We find no statistically significant periodicities related to the long-term influence of Earth tides on volcanic degassing of SO 2
