The paintings of the domus of Can Cruzate of Iluro (Mataró, Barcelona). A study of the techniques and decorative schemes
Las pinturas de la domus de Can Cruzate de Iluro (Mataró). Estudio técnico y decorativo
Résumé
The paintings in the domus of Can Cruzate have been found in a fragmentary state, but it has been possible to reconstruct the decoration based on some of better preserved pieces. Two complementary objectives are proposed: on the one hand, the study of the compositional schemes and the ornamental repertoire and, on the other, the study of the mortar support of the painting, carried out through petrographic analysis. The compositional schemes, both for the ceilings and the walls, are very simple and only the upper area of the triclinium presents a carpet style, with a succession of squares with central flowers. The proposed chronology is of the late 1st or early 2nd century AD. The petrographic study has made it possible to verify that the mortar materials are indigenous and that a careful selection of them was made, according to the function of each room.
