EQUESTRIAN EQUIPMENT OF THE GREAT MIGRATION OF NATIONS PERIOD FROM SÖSDALAAND ITS PONTO-DANUBE PARALLELS
Конское снаряжение эпохи Великого переселения народов из Сёсдалы и его понто-дунайские параллели
Résumé
A group of harness ornaments, with an engraved or stamped decoration, close to the discovery
of Sösdala, is attested in the “princely” context of the Hun era in Central and Eastern Europe. These
are the tombs, treasures and isolated discoveries from Jakuszowice, Kačin, Untersiebenbrunn, Bar
and Coşoveni de Jos, both in nomadic and sedentary environments. These ornaments have common
features, but each of them has specifi cities, and was probably crafted on demand. This harness, with
engraved and stamped decoration, is part of a large batch of items, usually grouped under the name
of Sösdala style, although the use of this term remains subject to discussion. The type of harness
mentioned above is attested in a large area from the Middle-Danube to the region of Dnieper-right
bank.
The Scandinavian harness ornaments and those of Central and Eastern Europe do not form the
same stylistic group, but have the same Roman prototypes and are two parallel lines of the shared
prestigious fashion among barbaric military elites. Thus, we can see that both the Scandinavian and
continental harness parts with stamped decorations represent two parallel lines of development of
the equestrian equipment with Roman prototypes. Their important place in the «princely» ritual is
obvious and, most likely, due to Eastern cultural infl uences, from the steppe and Eastern Germanic
environment.
