Using texts on numerical, graphical, and instrumental solutions of equations as a way of training teachers to conceive historical mathematical activities

Résumé

The aim of the talk is to show how teachers can be trained to design and experiment mathematical activities based on historical sources (texts and artefacts). The history of mathematics is not conceived here as an end in itself, but as a didactic tool in the service of the teaching and practice of mathematics. Indeed, one can think that the problems that interested mathematicians in the past and that led to the creation of mathematical concepts and methods taught today in secondary schools are particularly significant and likely to inspire teachers. Working on these problems by placing them in their historical context allows future teachers to deepen their mathematical education, to acquire a critical view of what is found in school textbooks and to change their representation of the knowledge taught. We will study short historical texts related to concepts taught in secondary schools, design pedagogical activities from these texts, and analyse extracts from textbooks, didactical material and work done by teachers in training. The guideline will be the solution of equations by numerical, graphical and instrumental methods. This is a rich theme that encourages frequent changes of frames between algebra and geometry, between numbers and figures, and between functions and curves.
