Résumé
New Testament Apocrypha: More Noncanonical Scriptures is a welcome addition to the recent collections of Christian Apocrypha. The volume collects a number of obscure documents, a few of which have never been translated into any modern language. The general introduction of the collection, however, suffers from the perpetuation of two misconceptions, namely, that “Christian Apocrypha” are necessarily “New Testament Apocrypha” (and, conversely, that “Old Testament Pseudepigrapha” are essentially Jewish) and that Apocrypha, being noncanonical books, are also rejected books. The individual introductions paint a different picture: Many of these works were quite popular and were even disseminated by ecclesial and monastic authorities, especially in menologia and other hagiographical sources. The Christian Apocrypha are therefore not merely key witnesses for the study of the development of the canon but also for the study of hagiography.
