Data documentation in the new round of the Generations and Gender Survey

Résumé

The Generations and Gender Survey (GGS; https://www.ggp-i.org/) is a cross-national longitudinal survey that provides data on a variety of topics including partnerships, fertility, work-life balance, transition to adulthood, intergenerational exchanges and later life. The first round of GGS was run in 20 countries (Europe and beyond) and based on post hoc data harmonization. Data documentation complied with the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) standard, and it was prepared and disseminated online through the software Nesstar. Metadata provided information on national fieldwork methodologies and on country deviations from the GGS standard questionnaire. However, the work was time demanding because only partially automated. This paper presents improvements in data documentation and online dissemination in the new round of GGS data collection (since 2020). To ensure that data is collected efficiently and effectively across a wide range of countries, the survey is now implemented from the GGS Central Coordination Office, which also allows optimizing data documentation. Nesstar was replaced with Colectica, a software used by other international or longitudinal projects (e.g., CLOSER Discovery). There is a twofold interest in implementing Colectica. First, it is compatible with Blaise, the computer-assisted interviewing software used in most countries fielding GGS. Colectica automatically generates a DDI codebook from the Blaise output file, thus reducing the documentation by hand of variable metadata and improving the accuracy of the information provided. This, together with automated processes to identify country deviations from the standard questionnaire, allows a considerable gain in efficiency. Second, Colectica makes use of DDI-Lifecycle, a version of DDI specifically suited for documenting conceptual and methodological issues of comparability across countries and waves. Additionally, the Colectica online portal allows performing cross-country comparisons of variable metadata and variable tabulations over time. The paper describes the new GGS data documentation procedure and the functionalities of the new online data-browsing portal.
