            <abstract xml:lang="en">
              <p>In the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death and, in all probability, of the actual composition of the Monarchia, this article starts from the dispute which has been rekindled in the last few decades concerning the dating of the treatise and, consequently, its conception and ultimate meaning. The aim is to assess once more the series of data bequeathed to us by the tradition surrounding the famous parenthesis «sicut in Paradiso Comedie iam dixi» (Mon., I XII 6), and indeed the very authorship of the work, as well as the glosses that some scholars suspect or indeed suppose were introduced at an unspecified point in the tradition into the text as it has come down to us. Given the non-existence of any serious element in support of such abstract hypotheses, the careful and unbiased examination carried out by the author demonstrates that it is clearly impossible to rely on any reasonable consideration or data to cast doubt on the authenticity of the above-mentioned quotation. In any case, and as is clearly shown by the author’s meticulous new examination of the known witnesses, the quotation’s authenticity rests on a level of evidence that is indisputably superior to that which supports Dante’s very authorship of the Monarchia. Although the case discussed here reveals definitively only one of the many more or less recent signs of a general weakening of the faculties of rational analysis which afflicts, not just textual philology, but almost all methods of enquiry or analytical or critical principle, the author expresses forcefully in the end the hope that the new examination of the documents and data that have come down to us that he offers can help bring the terms of the debate in question within the precise boundaries dictated by the evidence itself, with due respect for both a historical, exegetical and philological method that is truly worthy of the name, as well as for the fundamental presuppositions underlying every reasonable analysis.</p>
