Scientific Research as the Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage

La investigación científica como fundamento de la preservación del Patrimonio Cultural

Résumé

Science plays a major role in modern society and scientific research contributes to economic and social development. There are few fields in which the scientist has not invested. Art and patrimonial institutions are not exceptions. Science is welcomed there at first with certain cautiousness. In the 19th century, the director of the National Gallery of London is opposed to the permanent presence of a scientist, even if he is as renowned as Michel Faraday. As for Louis Pasteur, we know how hesitant the School of Fine Arts of Paris was to appoint him to the chair of geology, physics, and elementary chemistry, in 1863, for the benefit of the students. Somehow Paul Klee testifies this mistrust when he writes in his diaries (in January, 1906): “The worst state of affairs is when science begins to concern itself with art”. Nevertheless, it is in the museums that scientific research became imperative firstly for the study and conservation of works of art. Scientific laboratories are set up in1888 at the Staatliche Museum in Berlin, in 1919 at the British Museum, in 1929 in Boston, in 1931 at the Louvre in Paris, and in1934 at the National Gallery in London. Later, it opened up aspects of preventive conservation, and today sustainable development. Through certain examples possibly in the field related to photography, this paper addresses the roll of science in the preservation of cultural heritage, at the interface between the human sciences and natural sciences, and will also cover past, present and future developments.
