Habitat rubané à Presles-et-Boves (Aisne)

Pierre Allard

Résumé

Extensive rescue excavations in advance of gravel quarrying at Presles-et-Boves (Aisne, Picardy, France) in 2001 produced remains of a small early Neolithic site dating to the Paris basin latest LBK, adding new evidence to the already well-documented pattern of settlement for this period in the river Aisne valley. Unusually located on a sandy subsoil at some distance from the river, the site contains one well-preserved houseplan, and probable traces of two other houses. After a short description of these features, the ceramic and lithic finds are discussed. There are relatively few coarse-ware vessels. The fine-ware pottery is characterized by two-toothed comb decoration, dating the occupation to the early stage of the local latest LBK sequence. The ceramics from this short-lived settlement notably include a rare variant of Limburg pottery, decorated with comb impressions. The lithic assemblage is analysed in terms of raw material procurement, debitage sequences and tool kits. Although most blade tools are in flint from a source over 50 km from the site, flake tools are generally made on locally available flint or quartzite. The high frequency of borers and splintered pieces contrasts with most other LBK assemblages from the region. The question is also raised here of the extent to which lithic production can be reconstructed from finds in the pits alongside LBK houses, since in most cases knapping must have taken place outside their immediate vicinity. The data from Presles-et-Boves would nevertheless appear to confirm the more varied nature of lithic production on small sites, compared to larger and more long-lived settlements in the same region.
