Surface Treatment of Bioceramics

Résumé

Bioceramics are commonly used as substitutes in orthopedics and dentistry applications. After implantation, the first interaction between the substitute and the biological environment, really influenced by the implant surface properties, is crucial for the subsequent biological responses. Understanding this interaction and controlling the biomaterials surface properties therefore constitute a way of improving biointegration of implants. After briefly explaining how the surface properties could impact the interaction between a biomaterial and biological environment, this article reviews the surface modification techniques applied to bioceramics such as machining, grinding, sandblasting, chemical etching, polishing, laser treatment, ultraviolet light treatment, coating, biofunctionalization and self-assembly
