No Maglemosian bone tools in Mesolithic Norway so far!

Résumé

Recent investigations on the Mesolithic bone industry have been conducted at the Viste Cave, and the Sævarhelleren and Kotedalen settlement sites, all located in southwestern Norway. Mainly made of bone, the material is in the form of weapons, tools, objects and débitage waste. Based on the recorded manufactured items, this Mesolithic production can be seen as related to the north-eastern tradition. With special emphasis on the Kotedalen material that was entirely revised for the purpose discussed here, the argument derives from the technology the artefacts display. The industrial remains that witness a production principally turned towards the use of grindstone to produce fishhooks show, however, a regional pattern. This Mesolithic of the southwestern facade of the Scandinavian Peninsula displays moreover no remarkable change from ca. 8200 to 5700 cal BC.
