How Charles Crumb's childhood obsession with Stevenson's Treasure Island finally drove him crazy
Résumé
The paper documents the background of Charles Crumb, the brother of famous comix artist R. Crumb, who developed an eccentric obsession with the 1950 Walt Disney live-action movie Treasure Island based on R. L. Stevenson's famous novel. Following a viewing of the movie on TV in 1955, Charles became single-minded about dressing up and speaking like Welsh actor Robert Newton, the Disney film's Long John Silver. Years later it turned out that the eldest Crumb son's obession with Newton actually concealed his paedophilic crush on Bobby Driscoll, the child actor playing Jim Hawkins.
