Résumé
Fifty-sixth Grand Master of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, Jean-Paul de Lascaris Castellar belonged to one of the most prestigious noble families in the County of Nice, which has placed several Knights of Malta in Early modern times. He was Grand Master from 1636 to 1657. He supported Malta's military defence (fortification policy) and the Order's participation in the Candian War (1645-1669). He also worked to renovate the convent's religious life, in particular by supporting the poor and the sick. Throughout his life, he maintained strong links with Nice, his family and his local noble clientele. He bought a commandery in the County of Nice (Lucéram), the profits from which went to his family, and which became the property of the Order in the 18th century.
