The earliest occupations in Europe. An overview of the archaeological data from 1 Ma to 500 ka

Résumé

We propose a review of the main European sites from the earliest occupations to 500 ka, before the MIS 12. The European cores-and-flakes industries are late, dated to 1.5-1.4 Ma, mainly in the South. They may be from Africa, the Levant or Asia where persisted similar traditions while early Acheulean punctual dispersals went out of Africa to the Levant as soon as 1.4 Ma. Cores-and-flakes technology may have persisted after the arrival of bifacial technology from 900 ka and 700 ka and could have been incorporated due to contact with new hominin groups or ideas. A developped Acheulean is dated to 700-650 ka and three sites indicate a rapid expansion whatever the climate on the whole Western Europe. The diversity of traditions in Europe may be due to the successive arrivals (with extinction or not) of new traditions and know-how (by hominins or diffusion of ideas) and adaptation of hominins to new environments.
