Outcomes, consequences, impact and results of young environmental activists’ climate change protests in contemporary Britain

Résumé

Youth-led and youth-supported environmental activism grew from late 2018 onwards through multiple new networks, especially Fridays For Future (FFF) and Extinction Rebellion (XR). These now global movements adopted and adapted the activism of already existing environmental groups, in terms of methods, tactics and targets, etc. The motivations, mobilisations and methods of youth-led environmental activism have drawn much academic attention. Less studied have been the manifold internal and external consequences of young people’s environmental activism. This paper addresses external outcomes, consequences and results of young environmental activists’ protests over the past five years in Britain. It focuses on two fields: public opinion and institutional politics. Data and analysis are provided about: 1)The impact on public opinion about climate change, young environmental activists and their political actions. 2)The impact on political parties’ promises and pledges, such as declarations, manifestos, legislation and implementation. Drawing on diverse sources, the paper discusses the outcomes of young people’s environmental activism in contemporary Britain. It contributes to understanding the status and perceptions of young people as political agents, as well as this current young generation’s political participation and engagement more widely.
