No poplar plantations in the Loire valley landscapes!

Résumé

In 2000, a part of the Loire valley was registered on the world heritage Unesco list. This decision was considered as a good opportunity to develop nature tourism in the area, which was already known for its castles. But, a great concern appears about the necessity to preserve landscapes. In this valley, some poplars were planted on plots, following the agricultural abandonment, from 1950's-1960's. Their area increased and this was a great concern, especially for those, who want to preserve the traditional Loire valley landscapes. The detractors of poplar plantations considered that they spoil landscapes and obstruct sight. With the development of tourism, this concern grown and poplar plantations were not welcome anymore. Some public authorities, including municipalities, try to limit the area of these plantations, by using the legislative tools at their disposal. But what think tourists about these poplar plantations in the Loire valley? The oral communication will be based on research, which were conducted in the framework of a project, funded by the French ministry of agriculture and focused on the representations about poplar plantations. 69 tourists were interviewed in a semi-directive way. Their points of view about poplar were analyzed and they revealed that the efforts of the public authorities against poplars were unfounded as most of tourists considered that poplar plantations contribute to the diversity they plebiscite in the landscapes. Nevertheless, they would prefer more "natural" poplar plantations, being marked by the lines formed by trees.
