A temporary cultural place to make the creative city: Lx Factory in Lisbon. Staging, proximity models and tourist consumption

Un lieu culturel temporaire pour faire la ville créative : Lx Factory à Lisbonne. Mises en scène, modèles de proximité et consommation touristique

Résumé

Analyses of the "creative city" emphasize the multiplication of clusters or spaces bringing together actors in the cultural and creative sector. The context of the crisis and austerity policies has led several authors to speak of austerity urbanism when referring to these urban actions: these actions are to be linked, on the one hand, to a structural trend of disinvestment of institutional, municipal and metropolitan urban stakeholders and, on the other hand, to the austerity policies that responded to the cyclical inflection of the 2007-2008 crisis, particularly in Southern Europe. The city of Lisbon is no exception, and several projects, halted for lack of funding, have given rise to alternative initiatives thought to be temporary. Many positive discourses praise these projects and practices of temporary reuse of space that respond to the visible face of the recession, namely vacant spaces. In Lisbon, various initiatives have also been developed over the last few years, participating in the construction of a cultural and creative destination, in former industrial sites, but also in several districts of the city. One project is characteristic of these orientations: Lx Factory in the Alcantâra neighborhood in the west of the city. Created in 2007 as a temporary project to monetize a former industrial complex, Lx Factory (short for Lisboa Factory) has become an essential landmark in the city's dynamics, to the point that fourteen years later it has become a perennial cultural and tourist, leisure and consumer venue. This place, thought to be temporary, has now been perpetuated and integrated in tourist guides, but also in planning documents and municipal policies. My aim is to question the trajectories of urban places (from production to consumption) and to proceed to a decompartmentalized analysis of consumption spaces considered in their commercial, tourist, heritage, cultural and symbolic functions. These temporary or transitory initiatives are multiplying today in Lisbon (for example, a project to occupy vacant buildings is being studied on the idea of well-being with shops, but also restaurants, schools, etc.) and in other urban contexts and question the making of the city.
