Edgar A. Poe’s novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, as well as some of his short stories (A Descent into the Maelström, or Ms. found in a bottle) are memorable in the history of maritime exploration novels. Being in the first part both realistic and conventional, the outline of The Narrative of A. G. Pym follows a logbook pattern, paving the way to a lot of other novels thereafter. Exploration novels too were inspired by this model, particularly those by Jules Verne, who explicitly said he was writing a continuation to Poe’s novel in Le sphinx des glaces (1897), as the end of Pym seemed uncertain: that is the problem of writing a sequel to a novel. However, Le Sphinx des glaces did not turn out tobe the most successful novel in the prolific outpouring of sea writing, especially at the poles. In The Chancellor, JR Kazallon’s logbook, (1875), Verne had already recalled a series of sea events, covering more or less all the possible narrative patterns. Thus novelists have found a new way of writing sea voyage narratives after Pym’s adventures, on a scientific basis. But they scarcely mixed fantasy and realism with the same talent.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
