Silicified wood assemblages and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction from the Cenomanian of the Envigne valley (Vienne, France)

Résumé

In 1870 a French geologist, A. Le Touzé de Longuemar, mentioned for the first time the occurrence of silicified wood fragments in the Cenomanian green sands near the city of Saint-Léger la Pallu and Marigny-Brizay, Vienne department, western France. The few samples that he collected are now housed in the collections of Poitiers University, but they are not associated with information on neither the locality nor the period and are thus hardly exploitable. Recently, very numerous silicified wood fragments were collected from the middle Cenomanian of two localities situated in the Envigne valley, at less than 10 km away from the historical locality, not referenced. The first locality, called “La Maison Neuve” near Colombiers has yielded very numerous calcified and chalky driftwood, with piddock and shipworm perforations. They correspond to large trunks carried away in an estuarine or reef area in a marine environment. The second locality, called « Le Fouilloux » from Scorbé-Clairvaux, contains numerous silicified wood fragments having smaller diameter. They were discovered in clay silt indicating a coastal basin as in Jaunay-Clan (Valentin et al. 2014). Around fifty wood specimens (of the thousands collected) of the two localities have been prepared and examined. They consist of at least 8 xylotypes. According to these preliminary observations, the floristic composition is different in the two deposits. “La Maison Neuve” locality reflects a conifer-dominated forest whereas “Le Fouilloux” locality shows a more diverse floristic assemblage with conifers, angiosperms, cycads and ferns probably because of the occurrence of two distinct palaeoenvironmental contexts.
