This article examines the epigraphs placed in several rooms of the Mostra Augustea della Romanità (Augustan Exhibition of Romanità) in 1937, as transcribed in the Catalogue edited by Professor Giulio Quirino Giglioli. The extracts chosen to illustrate the “immortality of the idea of Rome” in 1937 built a network of quotations by poets and authors from ancient and modern times, framed by statements by Mussolini. These epigraphs enable us to understand the meaning of the notion of “Romanity” as presented to the Mostra’s visitors, and to identify the forerunners chosen by the regime to illustrate the idea of temporal and spatial continuity under the emblem of the Roman Empire. Finally, Mussolini’s selected quotations, marked by their prophetic dimension, are an invitation to look towards the future of the Fascist “Third Rome”.
