Du Roman de la Rose aux livres d'heures : étudier et comprendre les écritures de colophons

Résumé

In medieval manuscripts, colophons are often written in a different manner from the main text. The color, decoration, layout, script, formality, or writing style may diverge as do textual features (language, versification, declared authorship, cryptography). Stemming from the organization of the international competition in 2016, ‘Classification of Medieval Handwritings in Latin Script’, intended to test the capabilities of computers to date and classify medieval scripts, this paper formalizes a description framework for heterography in colophons. We discuss the notion of hierarchy of scripts and suggest that colophons should be compared with the whole volume and analyzed either as a trace of construction or as a mean of publication. To illustrate how important and difficult this analysis is, we first focus on the two hundred some manuscript copies of the Roman de la Rose because they constitute a distinctive body of material from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century France, with a specific analysis of the colophon in the Getty Museum’s Ludwig XV 7, f. 135v : the manuscript originally copied c. 1405–1410 in Textualis and its ‘colophon’ added in Cursiva during the 1460s and attributed here to Jean Castel. Then I discuss how catalogues of dated manuscript describe colophons and heterography. At the end of my article, I will briefly examine the manuscript belonging to our host institution, Yale University, Beinecke MS 689: I offer a reading of its colophon: it is dated 1436, followed by a rebus on the scribe’s name, here proposed as ‘Latomi’ and identified with the priest Guillaume Masson.
