Carnivora from the Middle Miocene of Southeast Asia and paleobiogeography of Miocene Asian Carnivora

Résumé

Palaeobiogeographical evolution of Miocene carnivoran faunas from Asia is poorly understood although Carnivora constitutes an essential component of continental ecosystems and Miocene is a critical period for Asian geological and climatic evolution. Here we describe new faunas from the late Middle Miocene of northern Thailand (mainly from Mae Moh and Chiang Muan Basins) and Myanmar (Irrawaddy Formation of Chaungtha), comprising a dozen species of amphicyonids, mustelids (mostly otters), viverrids and felids. The Mae Moh Basin of Thailand contains the richest carnivoran assemblage from the Miocene of Southeast Asia. These new faunas show generic and species similarities with assemblages from the Middle and Late Miocene of the Siwaliks (India and Pakistan), from the Late Miocene of the Yunnan Province (China) and from the Miocene of Africa and Europe. In light of these new data, similarity analyses of carnivoran faunas were performed for the Middle and Late Miocene of oriental Asia (from Pakistan to Japan and from China to Indonesia). Our results reveal a distinction between Southern Asian and Chinese faunas during the Middle Miocene, and between Southern and Central Chinese faunas during the Late Miocene. Geological and climate events occurring in Asia during the Miocene, driven or controlled by tectonic evolution of the Himalayas and the strengthening of the monsoonal systems, are considered partly responsible for the palaeogeographical distributions of carnivoran faunas.
