Burning characteristics of aluminum/air flames

Résumé

Metallic powders can be burned with air and recovered afterwards for recycling. Provided that the recycling process uses low-carbon energy sources, they might be used as a clean, high-density energy carrier. This work presents a new experimental setup capable of producing well-controlled aerosols and stabilizing Bunsen-type flames of aluminum particles in air. The aerosol temporal stability and spatial homogeneity are characterized by particle image velocimetry, laser beam attenuation and weighing measurements, and represent an improvement over previous similar setups described in the literature. Laminar burning velocities at various concentrations were measured by calculating the flame geometry, using both direct images from the burning aerosol and flame tomography images, while flame temperatures were measured by analyzing the flame emission spectrum. The apparatus is used to obtain reliable combustion data to guide the design of metallic powder combustors.
