Hermeneutics or Mythopoeia? Kitabatake Chikafusa approach to, and use of, the idea of Origin
Ermeneutica o mitopoiesi? La questione dell'origine in Kitabatake Chikafusa
Résumé
This paper focuses on the hermeneutic of Japanese ancient mythographies found in the works of Kitabatake Chikafusa, and in particular on the hermeneutic of the multi-faceted idea of origin. After a brief description of Kitabatake's life and thoughts, including a brief view on relevant aspects of medieval hermeneutics, three different concepts of origin are described, starting from four of Kitabatake's works: Jinnō shōtōki, Gengen shū, Tōke hiden and Nijūissa ki. Examples of works from later scholars – and in particular of Motoori Norinaga – are used to underline the influence that Kitabatake's work had in the history of Japanese hermeneutics.
