Imaging biochemical signatures of stress events in human deciduous teeth from the ‘ Tooth Fairy collection ’

Résumé

Teeth are one of the best preserved and most commonly recovered elements in archaeological and paleoanthropological assemblages. Dental tissues, such as enamel, dentin and cement, are formed and preserved as a layered structure that will be conserved throughout adult life. This layered sequence constitutes a record of unique information about evolutionary pathways and their underlying factors, growth and life-history schedules. For example, teeth preserve within their mineralized tissues evidence of an individual’s developmental trajectory that can provide information about gestation (duration and birth), as well as the way the individual interacted with its environment (diet, stress events). In order to test the potential of the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to obtain information about early life diet and environmental exposure we have tested this technique in a sample of two individuals from a modern collection. The Tooth Fairy collection is composed of about 900 naturally exfoliated deciduous teeth from around a hundred of modern-day individuals belonging to 40 families with known kinship and life-histories. The life-history records include date and place of birth, sex, birth weight and length, weight measurements during the first six months of life, whether the child was premature or a full-term birth, delivery conditions, and dietary information including weaning age. Analyses were conducted in second deciduous molars from individuals that were considered as examples of opposed type of early life diet in our sample: one that has been breastfeed and weaned after a few months and other that has not been breastfeed. We applied LIBS to determine the presence and distribution of major elements (C, P and Ca) and trace elements traditionally related with feeding and breastfeeding practices (Ba and Sr) and with environmental exposure (F and Cu). The preliminary results of elements distribution mapping show progressive changes in the enamel’s and dentin’s chemical composition. The variation of the ratios Sr/ Ca and Ba/ Ca are related to diet, especially when infants stop ingesting breast milk. These variations corelated to life-history records provides us information that can be interpreted as evidence of dietary differences between the individuals studied.
