Fracture in SiO2-B2O3-Na2O glasses
Résumé
During 2022, the global market for flat glass is estimated to exceed 100 billion metric tons. Moreover, the glass industry concerns many sectors of our daily lives (buildings, cars, dishes…) along with being integral parts of heat resistant technologies, protection panels (smart phones, plasma screens…), low-carbon energies (protection for solar panels) and satellites in outer space to name a few. Making them less reactive to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), tougher (increasing their fracture toughness, K_c) and lighter, while maintaining other properties, is a fundamental issue plaguing glass scientists and researchers.
This presentation will take a closer look on how the chemical composition of SiO2-B2O3-Na2O ternary glass systems alters the physical, mechanical and fracture properties of these systems. These changes lead to mesoscale changes as revealed by a novel parameter coined the depolymerization index. This parameter reveals surprising trends with the stress corrosion cracking behavior in Region I. The presentation will focus on stress corrosion cracking and how it varies with chemical composition and the depolymerization index.
