Les jardins « du climat de l’oranger » : Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier (1861-1930), traditions méditerranéennes et jardin à la française
Abstract
In the book Jardins: carnet de plans et de dessins (1920), the French landscape gardener J. C. N. Forestier invents the typology of the gardens “of the orange tree’s climate”, bringing together different traditions of garden design (Greco-Roman, Andalusian, Maghrebi, Italian). This article proposes to study the idea of the Mediterranean that issues from this typology, then to put it in perspective with the model of modern garden elaborated by Forestier from the beginning of the century. The aim is to focus on the way the Mediterranean inspires the renewal of garden design in France at the turning point of the century.
