The end of Mahākāśyapa and the encounter with Maitreya Two Leaves of a Maitreya-Cycle in Archaic TB

Athanaric Huard

Résumé

Th is paper provides an edition of two archaic texts written in Tocharian B: THT 1859 (completed by PK AS 15J, and relating the encounter of Maitreya and Kāśyapa) and 1860 (teaching how to encounter Maitreya). These texts also belong to a wider Maitreya cycle, reconstructed and com- pared here to other compositions on Maitreya in Tocharian literature and other languages (especially the Sanskrit Maitreyavyākaraṇa). Since the TB manuscript was found in Kuča and could be dated to the 4th–5th centuries according to paleography, it provides valuable insights on the different versions of the myth circulating in this period.
