How to defy your century? Proposals on changing the criteria of century-affiliation in literary history
This article proposes to reflect on the relationship between belonging to a century and survival beyond this century, based on the Bussy-Rabutin case. At the end of a comparison betwenn Bussy’s and Sévigné’s editorial fortunes, other ways of situating authors in literary history are considered based on proposals formulated by Daniel S. Milo: either by moving the landmarks of the « Grand Siècle » or by replacing, for the assignment of an author to a century, the criterion of the dates of biological life by that of the date of printed publication.
