              <p>The goal of this research is to identify relations between the perceived qualities (timbre, playability, …)of a given individual musical instrument (as evaluated by players and listeners) compared to otherinstruments of the same family and the description of its structural and acoustic properties. Here, we arenot comparing the timbre of different instruments as explored through the evaluation and measurementof a single note of for example a clarinet versus a single note of a trumpet, but the timbre of this violin(over the whole register) compared to the timbre of that violin. Our aim is to identify the acousticphenomena that can account for these perceptual timbre differences, which could provide insight toviolin makers about how to empirically modify some construction parameters in order to reach somedesired sound qualities.In the light of these various perceptual tests conducted on violins and violas associated to verbal analysesof questionnaires, we will show that there is no strict mapping between the perceived timbre and audiodescriptors as well as vibro-acoustical measurements, due to the complexity of the concept of timbrethat induce a large variability between musicians: the lack of consensus between the musicians’evaluation criteria actually results from the diversity of interpretations when evaluating the timbre of aninstrument globally (across the whole register, for different dynamics and playing techniques, …) andassessing the subtle acoustic differences between instruments of the same family.</p>
