Photoscapes: The Nexus between Photography and Landscape Design

Résumé

The research project « PhotoLandscape », whose purpose is to explore the subtle links established between photography and landscape design, finds its outcome in a publication. The book’s aim is to emphasize photography’s role regarding landscape’s projects and its position in the debates that spring from any form of management or transformation of landscapes. This role is of course changing regarding cultural contexts and historical phases. We chose to explore contemporaneity by paying particular attention to the uses that are revelatory of certain time phases, such as the intense use of the slide during the 1970s and 1980s or the strategic importance of construction work’s photographs in the process of creating a project. We questioned different generations of landscape designers, who contributed to the institutionalization of landscape design and thus created what one can call a true school of landscape design. We investigated their own use of photography, whether personal or in partnership with an agency. We also focused on the collaboration they might have developed with photographers – friends or professionals – committed to record the transformation of the territories that were initiated by the designers. The “Observatoires photographiques du paysage” (Landscape Photographic Observatories) were not overlooked as they are an important object of study, and an analysis of their development, retracing back to their formation in the 1990s, takes place in this book. An exchange between French and North-American researchers broadened a prospective survey. This book reflects a moment of partnership by including a series of contribution acting as a testimony of the circulation between different cultural fields. The main auxiliaries of this exchange are publications, exhibitions and conferences, three various forms of mediation all relying on photography. All of these will be at the core of many chapters in this book. The embodiment of the project through photographs forms another structuring theme of this upcoming work. Finally, the policies supporting photographic projects are analyzed by different authors through the entire volume. A round table conference gathering together photographs, landscape designers and researchers reassesses the topical aspect of a budding debate and the very purpose of a work reflecting and developing this debate. To end this book, five portfolios along with brief commentaries are made available to the reader. Alexandre Petzold,
