Load story: A Century of Pedestrian Logistics in Toulouse

Résumé

Walking is not only about people moving. It is also about what people carry when they are walking. In this chapter, we address the history of the latter practice of carrying things, or what we term “pedestrian logistics,” by capturing street life in a French city over a century. We observe a striking paradox. On the one hand, the practice of moving things on foot is ubiquitous: it can be seen everywhere in the public space, in pictures of street life, and, as seen in Colin Pooley’s contribution to this volume, even in criminal court cases. Perhaps counterintuitively, given the emphasis of the dominant discourse on motorization, people still find it practical and rational to transport stuff on foot. This practice plays a key role in how people behave in the street. From a global perspective, moreover, pedestrian transport is also more sustainable than motorized transport because it reduces travel distances, saves energy, and avoids pollution...
