In October 1766, the botanist Philibert Commerson embarked on the ship L'Etoile for an expedition around the world commanded by Bougainville. He never came back to France. What were the antecedents and goals of a botanist in the midth of the 18th century ? What was the experience of Commerson as a botanist and a naturalist during this pionneering journey, and what became of his work and collections after his death ?
