Editing the eleventh- and thirteenth-century monastic rolls-cartularies preserved in France: ambitions and requirements of a multimodal edition (ROTULUS ANR JCJC Project)

Résumé

Funded by the Agence nationale de la Recherche for the period 2019-2022 and led by Jean-Baptiste Renault in the Centre de recherche universitaire lorrain d’histoire at the University of Lorraine in Nancy (France), the ROTULUS ANR JCJC Project focuses on the rolls-cartularies preserved in France. First, it consists of making a codicological inventory of the rolls-cartularies produced from the eleventh to the fifteenth century. Its second aspect is devoted to the edition of the eleventh- and thirteenth-century monastic rolls-cartularies. This critical edition concerns 71 rolls-cartularies, that being 1609 copies of deeds. In order to provide sources to mediaevalists, this edition in a multimodal way (in paper and electronic form) was designed for readers thanks to E-cartae digital tool, which is developed by Grégory Combalbert and the Pôle Document Numérique at the University of Caen. However, a careful analysis was conducted to meet the expectations of a standard paper edition before thinking about the alternative display capacities of a digital edition. E-cartae was shaped for editing deeds. Consequently, its adaptation is necessary to respond to new needs imposed by the material form of the rolls-cartularies. Moreover, a significant choice was made to edit each roll-cartulary for itself, in order to better highlight its place and role in the textual tradition. It will permit, for instance, to understand the copyist’s methodology by bringing the originals and copies that served him out, and to consider the copies made from the roll in order to approach the reception of this compilation.
