Philip’s commentary on Job is one of the few texts which, although their existence and handwritten tradition are known, do not appear in the Patrologia Latina. It was written either between 390 and 397 or between 437 and 455. Philip’s exegesis is, partly, based on typology: Job is seen as a prefiguration of the Christ. Therefore, Philip resorts frequently to biblical citations from New Testament. The question arises as to whether he is quoting existing Latin versions or he is using a ‘mental text’. While some of his citations have co-witnesses, some others have fewer, and are sometimes the only evidence for the wording he is using. This paper seeks to demonstrate that, even when there are no co-witnesses to Philip’s biblical citations, his work is an interesting source for the reconstruction of the Old Latin New Testament.
