City logistics for sustainable and liveable cities

Résumé

This discussion paper tackles the complicated and important problems of city logistics or urban freight transport for sustainable and liveable cities. It focuses on the use of emerging technologies including Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Internet of Things (IoT), big data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous vehicles, and robots as well as the public-private collaborations of stakeholders. It clarifies the innovative solutions for urban freight transport issues for sustainable and liveable cities based on the experiences of planning, modelling, and evaluating policy measures, strategies, and management of city logistics in Europe, Japan, and Australia. The paper discusses the important factors for promoting city logistics such as the integrated platform, data sharing between public and private sectors, urban consolidation centres, multi-agent simulations, use of autonomous vehicles, and public-private partnerships. It concludes that the collaborations between stakeholders are critical for successful implementation of city logistics initiatives, and modelling city logistics using the simulation and optimisation techniques based on the emerging technologies is essential to anticipate the effects of policy measures and benefits for each stakeholder to make proper decisions.
