The installations of the Chinese artist Xu Bing: the invisible space of language

Marie Laureillard

Résumé

With his first installation "Book from the Sky" (1987-91), the Chinese artist Xu Bing 徐冰 demonstrated China’s opening to global artistic currents and his aim to have a strong social impact in China. In later projects, he addresses topics reaching a broader, global audience, such as the project of universal writing with "Square English calligraphy" (1998), "The living word" (2001) or "Book from the Ground" (2003-2019). In all these installations, his wish to communicate with spectators through language is striking—often based on an interactive approach—as well as to integrate a global space. The spectator is immersed in the space of words, while the work establishes a dialogue with an invisible space, the space of language. This text explores this point of tangency between the here/tangible and the inside/intangible space of words.
