Résumé
The Itanos archaeological survey is an interdisciplinary scientific project, the main aim of which is to retrace human occupation of the far eastern peninsula of Crete around the ancient ruins of Erimoupoli (municipality of Palaikastro). The area surveyed covers almost 20 km² and represents around one-sixth of the territory of the Greek city of Itanos in the Hellenistic period. Aimed primarily at establishing the history of this Greek polis within its territorial framework, the research carried out in the territory of Itanos has also revealed human occupation since the Final Neolithic, with a phase of intense activity during the Neopalatial Minoan period. The surveyed area thus provides an insight into how land was occupied and used over the centuries within different political and administrative systems. The database is freely accessible.
La mission de prospection archéologique menée à Itanos est un projet scientifique interdisciplinaire, dont l’objectif principal est de retracer l’occupation humaine dans la péninsule extrême-orientale de la Crète autour des ruines antiques d’Erimoupoli (commune de Palaikastro). La surface prospectée s’étend sur près de 20 km² et représente environ un sixième du territoire de la cité grecque d’Itanos à l’époque hellénistique. Visant premièrement à inscrire l’histoire de cette polis grecque dans son cadre territorial, les recherches menées dans la chôra d’Itanos ont également mis en évidence une occupation humaine depuis le Néolithique final, avec une phase d’intenses activités au cours de l’époque minoenne néopalatiale. Le territoire prospecté permet ainsi d’appréhender les modalités d’occupation et d’exploitation des sols à travers les siècles au sein de systèmes politiques et administratifs différents.
