The physical interpretation of the signal processing cross-correlation using TR-NEWS : an acoustic point of view

Résumé

One of the strategic plan of the international non-destructive testing (NDT) community is to define standards for developing advanced and digitalized automated NDT set-up in modern mass production, defining the concept of NDT 4.0 or NDE 4.0. In this framework data and signal processing are the elementary components of digitalization processes of the ultrasonic (US) and Acoustic Emission based NDT methods. Among these modern signal processing tools, nonlinear signal processing is a new field of research with the aim to optimize the detection of the nonlinear acoustic response coming from a complex medium. Within the wide range of possibilities of signal processing methods, those using symmetry properties seems to be more efficient for extraction of a specific information. Various nonlinear methods have been investigated in recent years for the detection of faults and fatigue in carbon-fibre reinforced composite materials and structures [2]. The most common include harmonic and overtone generation, inter-modulation product generation and resonant frequency shift, also known as Nonlinear Elastic Wave Spectroscopy (NEWS) methods. Consequently, new optimized excitations such as Time Reversal (TR) are needed and, thanks to the analysis of symmetry properties of the cross-correlation function, a wide range of innovation are classified within TR-NEWS methods. The typical TR-NEWS equipment consists of a preamplifier Juvitek TRA-02 (0.02-5MHz) connected to a computer, an amplifier Acquitek VBA100-110 model (110 W at 0.01-100MHz), a shear wave transducer Technisonic (2.25 MHz), and a longitudinal wave transducer Panametrics V155 (5 MHz). The experimental device was tested with the new V3 calibration blocks[3], improved and specially scaled in order to access to a wide range of multivalued parameters: mechanical properties, ultrasonic parameters (celerity and attenuation) and local geometric data.
